Project: IAR-330 L Upgrade Program
Program’s objective: developing in concept study an achievable variant of a medium helicopter with multirole mission capabilities, including UN operations, by the revitalization and upgrade of IAR-330 L helicopters, produced by IAR Brașov and presently in Air Force service at 862 Transport Squadron Mihail Kogalniceanu. The main goal was to provide a solid analysis to the decision makers in order to initiate the acquisition process of the required number of helicopters.
Results: the concept study provided a comparative analysis of equipment options compatible with multirole missions, including UN missions. The analysis included both equipment options and the corresponding costs.
The analyzed options were:
Option 1 ”Basic”: specialized equipment installed in a stand-alone configuration.
Option 2 ”Basic + DVE”: brings additional the BrightNite integrated system, which offers support to the pilot in dangerous situations when the visual possibilities of establishing helicopter’s position are limited or non-existing.
Option 3 ”Basic + EW + DVE”: brings additional HSPS systems.
Using a performance / cost criterion and taking into consideration multiple variants of evaluating the main characteristics, the concept study recommended Option 2 as optimal, which later was approved to be used in the acquisition process.
